The Passing of Pope Francis

It is with great sadness that we receive the news of the passing of our Holy Father, Pope Francis.  We take some consolation and peace knowing he passed on the day after we celebrated the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, and that he was able to address the faithful just hours before his passing. Since the first day he assumed the chair of St Peter, Pope Francis has demonstrated the pastoral care and compassion of a loving spiritual father.  His focus has always been on the poor, the sick, the imprisoned and the marginalized of our society. He was an advocate for peace, a careful steward of our environment, the voice of the immigrant, but most of all, he was a pastor of souls, promoting reconciliation and manifesting the heart of Jesus to so many. He truly imitated the saint from whom he took his name.

In our Catholic faith, the pope is the successor of St Peter to whom Jesus gave the keys to the kingdom of God.  Pope Francis assumed that responsibility with great faith, hope and love.  He challenged the faithful to live the faith in a heroic way and he showed it by example.  He also challenged us to be a welcoming Church while still holding to the truths the Church teaches.  His legacy will enrich the Church for generations to come.

Please join me, first, in prayerful thanksgiving for the pontificate of Pope Francis. Then pray for his journey home to where he is called to be.  Finally pray for our Cardinals who will meet to elect a new successor to the Chair of St Peter. Pray they are open to the wisdom and guidance of the Holy Spirit in their discernment.

Join us today for Prayer at St. John the Evangelist Church at 7:00 pm for the recitation of the rosary and exposition of the Blessed Sacrament.
